Born December 31st 1926 as Tom Marvolo Riddle, Lord Voldermort grew to be the darkest wizard ever. Half wizard half Muggle, Voldermort was first conceived when his mother, a witch, used a love potion on a Muggle, Tom Riddle Sr. Because his conception was due to magic, Voldermort would never be able to truly understand what love was. His mother died when he was young, his father abandoned him completely. Voldermort was raised in an orphanage where even at a young age he showed signs of darkness.
He started Hogwarts at age 11 and was bright in academics, though Dumbledore who was a teacher at the time never quite trusted him, even then. He always considered Hogwarts to be his home as he had known no real home before then. After leaving Hogwarts he travelled for some years. Through his travels he started to develop a rather large following. He preached beliefs of a "pure blood only" world, ironic since he himself was only a half blood wizard.
He soon began his terror as the evil Lord Voldermort. He had a large cult following, calling themselves the Death Eaters, they killed for their dark Lord. While his following was large, Voldermort never truly trusted anyone but himself. Severely afraid of his own death, Voldermort used evil, dark magic to secure that it would be especially difficult for anyone to truly kill him.
He took his soul an divided it in to six pieces, although it ultimately turned in to seven pieces, storing each piece into an object of significance to him, turning each on in to a Horcrux This meant that no matter how many times his body form was defeated his soul, therefore he, would continue to live on.
List of Horcux
Diary - Voldermort secured a part of his soul in a diary that he left in the position of his trusted follower Lucius Malfoy. His soul would forever live on in the pages of this diary if it had not been for Harry destroying the diary with a basilisk fank after Voldermort used it to open the Chamber of Secrets.
Ring - Another part of his soul was placed in a ring belonging to his maternal grandfather Marvolo Gaunt. The ring was destroyed by Albus Dumbledore.
Locket - a part of Voldermort's sould was stored in a locket belonging to Salazar Slytherin, one of the founders of Hogwarts. This locket was destroyed by Ron Weasley by using the sword of Gryffindor.
Cup - part of his soul was stored in a cup belonging to Hogwarts founder Helga Hufflepuff. This Horcrux was destroyed by Hermoine Granger with a basilisk fang in the Chamber of Secrets during the Battle of Hogwarts.
Diadem - part of his soul was stored in a diadem belonging to Hogwarts founder Rowena Ravenclaw. Voldermort tricked the ghost of Helena Ravenclaw, Rowena's daughter, in to telling him where the diadem was. It was destroyed by Vincent Crabbe during the Battle of Hogwarts unintentionally when he casted a Fiendfyre.
Snake - Voldermorts most trusted ally was his pet snake Nagini. He stored a part of his soul in her right before his first defeat by Harry Potter while he was still an infant. Nagini was destroyed by Neville Longbottom at the Battle of Hogwarts using the sword of Gryffindor.
Harry Potter - this was the Horcrux that Voldermort never intended to create. When Voldermort tried to kill Harry in Godric`s Hollow when Harry was still a baby, a part of Voldermort`s soul escaped his body and was transported in to Harry. This part was destroyed when Voldermort tried to kill Harry at the Battle of Hogwarts.
